1. Contact your Local Emergency Manager to indicate that you're interested.
2. Complete the required CERT training, generally about 20 hours length in total.
Note: FEMA's IS-317 is a great on-line course to provide background, but will not certify you to activate in the event of an emergency.
3. Complete the loyalty oath and background check through your Emergency Management Director (EMD) Obtain a picture ID from your EMD You will be provided with a kit upon graduation from the course. You may indicate if you have a specific interest in assisting. e.g., some individuals prefer to focus on staffing shelters while others are willing to go door to door to complete initial damage assessment and triage as needed.
4. DO NOT activate individually or you will void any liability and workers compensation coverage currently in effect by the State of CT.
5. Make sure you and your family are prepared so that you are available to assist during a declared emergency.
6. Volunteer and assist in increasing awareness about CERT programs in your neighborhood.
7. Participate in routine training to maintain and enhance your skills.
